May 2025 Handwoven Punch Needle Tapestry In Thread Bare, Kurban explores how queer Arab identity and cultural heritage can be expressed through rug weaving, employing memory, resistance, and sacredness to preserve and elevate marginalized LGBTQ+ narratives. Through the physically intensive and meditative act of large-scale punch-needling, the artist transforms inherited textile practices into a site of queer insurgency—each thread bearing witness to lives that history has tried to erase. The creation of the monumental tapestry became both a physical ordeal and a spiritual ritual. As the material accumulated, so too did exhaustion: aching shoulders, deepening eye circles, the slow accrual of labor over time. Yet the repetitive act of weaving—deliberate, devotional—became a sanctuary for reflection. Stepping away from a heavily research-driven methodology, Kurban embraced intuition, letting form emerge from within. Some draw from ancestral signs, others are newly imagined, carved into the cloth as constellations of remembrance and resistance. They honor lives and lineages often rendered invisible, reclaiming cultural space through the sacred act of making. In Kurban’s hands, rug weaving becomes more than craft—it is an embodied archive, a poetics of insurgent memory. This work interrogates the intersection of queer identity, Arab heritage, and textile art, drawing from queer theory, Middle Eastern art history, and textile studies. It situates itself within a lineage of queer Arab artists who reclaim cultural memory through traditional practices, challenging the colonial gaze and Western narratives that have long marginalized MENA voices. Kurban’s practice queers the sacred archive, not only preserving but transforming it—offering a future woven with resilience, visibility, and love. At its core, Thread Bare is a bridge between past and present, a tapestry of grief and joy, mourning and celebration. February 2026 Artistic direction, visual identity, logo design Developed within the Futura Incubator, RaveScreen explores new ways of experiencing cinema by responding to the growing desire for collective, embodied, and participatory cultural formats. The project proposes a hybrid model where film, live electronic music, and mediation coexist — reintroducing movement, presence, and shared energy into the cinematic space while preserving the integrity of the film. As part of its development, L’agence So provided creative direction, shaping a visual identity that reflects this intersection of worlds. The logo combines bold, contemporary typography (Nohemi) with a radiant, halftone light motif that evokes both rave culture (strobe, vibration, energy) and cinema (projection, focus, screen). Designed as a flexible and scalable system, the identity adapts seamlessly across formats — from digital interfaces to large-scale projections — mirroring the project’s hybrid, modular, and evolving program in Beirut developed in collaboration with the Art Explora Festival. March 2025 - June 2025 Graphic Design, Visual Identity, Typesetting Public Health Public Health is a long-term series of site-specific commissions, nearly seven years in the making. Launched in 2017, the initiative invited eight contemporary artists to critically engage with the hospital as a “non-place” – a term coined by Marc Augé to describe spaces where individuals pass through without forming lasting connections or a sense of belonging. The pilot project launched in Beirut in May 2025. Kurban was responsible for the graphic design of printed and digital materials, ranging from labels to wall texts. December 2024 Prototype Punch Needle Rug My prototype rug, Threads of Resistance, is a deeply personal exploration of queer Arab identity and cultural heritage. Through the medium of rug weaving, I delve into themes of memory, resistance, and sacredness to celebrate and elevate marginalized LGBTQ+ narratives. Exhibition Experience at Galerie 45 Threads of Resistance was recently showcased as part of the group exhibition Time and Self at Galerie 45, which provided a vital testing ground for my prototype. Serving on the exhibition’s communications team offered me a unique perspective on the collaborative process behind bringing diverse artistic voices together. Photo courtesy of the artist. Research and Concept This project draws on extensive research at the intersection of queer identity, Arab heritage, and textile art. Inspired by the works of artists like Kubra Khademi and theorists like Edward Said, I situate my practice within a broader dialogue about reclaiming cultural narratives. Central to this investigation are two guiding questions: How can traditional practices like rug weaving be transformed into tools for queer self-expression and resistance?What role does memory play in preserving and elevating erased or silenced queer narratives within Arab culture? Through this lens, Threads of Resistance blends ancestral techniques with contemporary queer storytelling, creating a bridge between historical and modern identities. The imperfections and texture of the punch-needling process have become integral to the piece, reflecting the dualities of fragility and resilience inherent in the queer Arab experience.Advanced Research Seminar: Artist Talk In parallel with this project, I was assigned to create an artist talk for my Advanced Research Seminar class: Threads of Resistance: Weaving Queer Stories into Collective Memory. This presentation allowed me to articulate my inspirations, delve deeper into my research, and reflect on the journey of developing my thesis project. Drawing from queer theory, Middle Eastern art history, and textile studies, my script detailed the ways in which memory, resistance, and sacredness inform my work. By sharing process images and insights, I aimed to foster a dialogue about the intersections of identity and craft, inviting my audience to connect with the themes that drive my practice. ARS ARTIST TALK SCRIPT Prototyping and Progress The prototyping phase revealed several key insights. The labor-intensive nature of the process resonated deeply with my themes of patience, devotion, and love in preserving marginalized voices. To further enhance accessibility, I plan to create supplementary materials for the final presentation, including a “key” for interpreting the rug’s symbolic elements and a thoughtfully designed scenography. The finished rug will integrate insights gained from this exhibition, emphasizing intimacy and sanctity while inviting audiences into a shared space of reflection and connection. VIEW MENU Immersion Through Detail Salon 11 was more than a meal—it was a journey. The setting featured vintage tablecloths, antique-style tableware, muted floral centerpieces, and art-inspired decor such as easels and artist tools. Cultural Fusion: The dining experience reflected the international community of artists who gathered in Montparnasse, blending culinary traditions into each course. User Testing: A trial run on December 5th allowed us to fine-tune the menu, pacing, and engagement elements to ensure an unforgettable experience. Impact Salon 11 not only celebrated the past but also contributed to the future of arts and culture at L’AiR Arts. Proceeds are imagined to support the restoration of Atelier 11, a historical artist studio, and furthered contemporary cultural exchange programs. This project was a labor of love, a deep dive into the intersection of history, art, and gastronomy.
